Abstract

R esearch to date has not represented the full race, class, age, and cultural diversity of lesbians and other women who partner with women. However, there has been recent suggestion that some populations of lesbians may be at increased risk of developing breast cancer based on a confluence of known or suspected risk factors for the disease. The incidence of cervical cancer among lesbians has not been studied, although risk behaviors have been well documented. Lesbians appear to be less likely to receive routine screening for breast and cervical cancer than recommended by accepted standards of care and may therefore be at risk of increased morbidity and mortality resulting from delayed diagnosis and treatment.
