Abstract
Nonlinear axisymmetric cylindrical plasma oscillations are investigated analytically and numerically. It is shown that the breaking of strongly nonlinear oscillations is attributed to a singularity in the electron density and occurs several periods after the onset of an off-axis density maximum. For weakly nonlinear conditions, an analytic dependence of the breaking time of the oscillations on their amplitude is obtained based on the effect of intersection of electron trajectories and is shown to agree with numerical results.
