The possible clash between evolution teaching and religion is a matter of world relevance. There are several possible ways of accommodating these two perspectives, one of them is the view of theistic evolutionists. We analyzed public views regarding the acceptance of theistic evolutionism, in a sample in Brazil. The variables religion and level of education were analyzed. Regarding religion, it was observed that theists tended to agree with the statement. Schooling also influenced the choice of respondents. As the education level increased, the frequency of disagreement also increased, maybe this result is related to the acquisition of knowledge about evolution. Keywords: theistic evolution, creationism, biological evolution.

Objective: To analyze demographic and socio-economic determinants of neonatal mortality Introduction: Evidence suggests that it is challenging to reduce the infant and under-five mortality without specific focus on neonatal mortality, given that about 43% of under-five deaths and 60% of infant deaths are attributed to neonatal mortality. Hence, key to achieving MDG-4 is the reduction of the global total of 3.82 million neonatal deaths per year, especially the 3 million who pass away in the first week of life (early neonatal period). Socio-economic and demographic variables are generally viewed as important determinants to a range of health outcomes, including neonatal mortality. The current study collected and analyzed the socio-demographic determinants of Qatar's Neonatal Mortality during 2011 about which little is known in the published literature. Methods: A Prospective National Epidemiologic Study was carried out to assess the association between fourteen demographic and socioeconomic variables and neonatal mortality. Data was collected from the 2011 National cohort of 20,583 live births and 102 neonatal deaths and entered in Qatar National Perinatal Registry (Q-Peri-Reg). One fetal variable (gender), three maternal variables (level of education, occupation, age), three paternal variables (level of education, occupation, age), and seven household (family) variables (nationality, consanguinity, family income, house ownership, type of housing, family type, domestic help) were analyzed in a univariate regression model. Results: Less than secondary level of maternal education was associated with two-fold increase in neonatal mortality (OR 2.08, 95% CI 1.23-3.53, p=0.009). The association between the rest of the thirteen variables and neonatal mortality was non-significant. Conclusions: Higher level of maternal education, as compared to lower level of maternal education, is significantly associated with reduced neonatal mortality. Keywords: neonatal mortality, demographic, socio-economic variables, maternal, paternal, household, family

The study analyzed the demographic and socio-economic determinants of neonatal mortality. The variables included one fetal variable (gender), three maternal variables (level of education, occupation, age), three paternal variables (level of education, occupation, age), and seven household (family) variables (nationality, consanguinity, family income, house ownership, type of housing, family type, domestic help). One calendar year data (January to December 2011) was extracted from Qatar's National Perinatal Registry and analyzed using a univariate regression model. Qatar had a total of 20,583 live births and 102 neonatal deaths during 2011 (NMR 4.95/1000). Less than secondary school maternal education level, as compared to secondary school or above maternal education level, was the only variable significantly associated with neonatal mortality (OR 2.08, 95% CI 1.23 - 3.53, p=0.009). The association between the remaining thirteen variables and neonatal mortality was non-significant. Priority investment to raise female literacy above secondary school level may significantly improve neonatal survival.

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between teachers' creative thinking dispositions and school climate. In addition, whether teachers' creative thinking dispositions and perceptions of school climate differ according to gender, professional seniority, type of education and school level were discussed. In the study, relational survey model was preferred among quantitative research methods. The population of the study consists of 3350 public teachers working in public schools of different types and levels in Gaziosmanpaşa district of Istanbul province in the 2018-2019 academic year. The sample of the study, on the other hand, consisted of 720 teachers determined by the cluster sampling method. "Marmara Creative Thinking Disposition Scale" (MYDEÖ) and "School Organizational Climate Scale" (SOCS) were used to collect the data. Independent groups t-test, one-way analysis of variance (Anova), correlation and simple regression analysis were used to analyze the data. As a result of the analysis, the creative thinking dispositions of the teachers were found at a high level. Significant differences were found between the groups in the levels of teachers' creative thinking dispositions according to gender and professional seniority variables, and no significant difference was found between the groups according to the variables of education level and school level. Significant differences were found between the groups in terms of teachers' perceptions of school climate according to the variables of gender, seniority, and school level. According to the educational level variable, a significant difference was found only in one sub-dimension of the school climate. However, a significant relationship was found between teachers' creative thinking dispositions and school climate. In addition, it was found that school climate predicts teachers' creative thinking dispositions significantly.

In this study, which is in a descriptive research design, it is aimed to determine the perceptions of teachers and administrators working at primary schools about the educational unions according to various variables. The population of this study consists of primary school teachers and administrators working at Malatya downtown at 2007-2008 academic years. The sample of this study consists of 323 teachers and 43 administrators working at 24 primary schools that were selected randomly from the population. In comparisons, (unrelated) t test, variants analysis, Krusskall-Wallis H test and Mann-Whitney U test have been utilized for independent samples. The results of this study showed that there were meaningful differences between the views of trade union member and nonunion at all items. While there were meaningful differences between the views of teachers according to the variables of gender, branc, seniority, and education level, there were not meaningful differences between the views of teachers only according to the variable of type of task.Democracy requires participation, consensus, equalitarianism and pluralism (Özdemir, 1987). Trade unionism is a complementary element of democracy and also an integral part of democracy. Free and independent trade unions are supportive parts of democracy (Tortop, 2005: 142). In our country, teachers have a special place among civil servants. With teachers’ large share in the total number of civil servants, teacher unions’ will possibly be more and more important. Although teacher unions suffer from the lack of experience in this country, they are expected to make serious contributions to education life. For this reason, it is important to put forward teachers’ views on trade unionism. The purpose of this paper is to determine the perceptions of teachers and administrators working at primary schools about the educational unions according to various variables. In this study, a survey based descriptive design was used. After the related literature was examined, the theoretical framework was constructed and the questionnaire was drafted. The instrument used for data collection in this study was originally developed by the researcher. Before this draft was administered, the opinions of specialists, administrators and teachers were taken about the content and the language of this questionnaire and the necessary improvements were made. According to the results, Cronbach Alpha Coefficient was 0,8564 for the overall questionnaire. This study was carried out in Malatya city centre (total 3508 administrators and teachers who work at 163 primary schools) in 2007-2008 academic year. Using stratified sampling method, 43 administrators and 323 teachers working at 24 schools were selected randomly. A total of 366 questionnaires were validated and evaluated. The questionnaire that has 24 items was administered to these administrators and teachers. Data were analyzed by SPSS program. In comparisons, T-test and Mann-Whitney U test (for the variables of gender, branch, type of task and being a member of the union), One Way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests (for seniority and education level) were utilized to analyze the data. The results of this study showed that there were meaningful differences between the views of the trade union members and the ones that have no membership. While there were meaningful differences between the views of participants according to the variables of gender, branch, seniority and education level, there were not meaningful differences between the views of participants only according to the variable of type of task. According to the T-Test results (which has been made between males: N=238 and females: N=128), there were meaningful differences between the views of the men and women trade union members at the first item. At the first item, the ideas of women were more negative than the ideas of men. According to the T-Test results (which has been made between class teachers: N=219 and branch teachers: N=147), there were meaningful differences between the views of participants. At the items of 5 and 21, branch teachers have more positive opinions than class teachers. According to the One-Way ANOVA results (which has been made between the education levels of associate degree: N=77, undergraduate: N=274 and graduate: N=15), there were meaningful differences among groups at the item of 22. Scheffe test showed that there was a significant difference between the opinions of participants in the groups of associate degree and undergraduate at the item of 22. According to the results of Kruskall Wallis test, there were meaningful differences among education level groups at the items of 2 and 5. Kruskall Wallis test showed that there was a significant difference between the opinions of participants in the groups of associate degree and undergraduate at the items of 2 and 5. Kruskall Wallis test showed that there was a significant difference between the opinions of participants in the groups of associate degree and graduate at the item of 5. Participants were divided into three tenure groups: (1) 1-10 year, N= 119; (2) 11-20 year, N=153; (3) 21 year and above, N: 94. According to the One-Way ANOVA results, there were meaningful differences among tenure groups at the item of 5. At this item, less tenured participants had more positive opinions about educational unions. Scheffe test showed that there was a significant difference between the opinions of participants in the tenure groups of 1-10 year and 20 year and above at the item of 22. According to the results of Kruskall Wallis test, there were meaningful differences among tenure groups at the items of 6 and 22. Kruskall Wallis test showed that there was a significant difference between the opinions of participants in the tenure groups of 1-10 year and 20 year and above at the items of 6 and 22. Kruskall Wallis test showed that there was a significant difference between the opinions of participants in the tenure groups of 11-20 year and 20 year and above at the item of 6. T test and Mann Whitney U test showed that there were meaningful differences between the views of the trade union members and the ones that have no membership at all items except for the item of 23. The results of this study showed that most of the educational staff viewed trade unionism in this country as insufficient. Both the members of the unions and the ones that have no membership shared this view. There were meaningful differences between the views of the trade union members and the ones that have no membership, as it was found similarly at Gemici’s (2008) research. As Yıldırım’s (2007) and Aldatmaz’s (2002) researches revealed, the results of this study showed that they want a legislative regulations that facilitate striking and collective bargaining. The results of this study also showed that women do not give much importance to unionization as it was found similarly by Boyacı (1994), Çınar (2008) and Aldatmaz (2002). Results imply that trade unions are not independent in their relationships with political entities.

Introduction: Domestic violence is based on phenomena that establish a relationship of subordination, whose behaviors are related to physical, psychological and sexual damage, through the actual or symbolic use of force, with the aim of dominating the will, mind and body of the victim. Objective: To determine the sociodemographic factors associated with women victims of domestic violence in Peru during the year 2021. Materials and Methods: This is an observational, retrospective, analytical and cross-sectional study, developed through the ENDES 2021 secondary databases, using information from 21,557 women. Said information was analyzed using the SPSS vers.27 statistical software and prevalence ratios were used through the Poisson regression model with robust variance. Results: A prevalence of 47.7% for psychological violence was determined. The multivariate analysis identified that the variables associated with psychological violence were the level of primary education (APR: 1.10) and the metropolitan Lima region (APR :1.14). Regarding sexual violence, the poor wealth level (APR: 2.35) was the associated variable, and for physical violence, the age of 20 to 29 years (APR: 1.21), poor wealth level (APR: 1.495) and the coastal region (APR: 0.79). Conclusions: Factors associated with psychological violence were identified as the level of education and the natural region, marital status was a protective factor against sexual violence, and the variables of age and wealth level were associated with physical violence.

A Short History of the Modern Creation Movement and the Continuing Modern Cultural Wars
  • May 1, 2003
  • The Journal of American Culture
  • Gerald Bergman

Introduction Until the early 1800s, both common and highly educated persons in the Western world believed that all living things were deliberately created according to the general outline found in Genesis (Numbers, Creationism 5; Darwinism Comes 24-48). Jared Diamond argues that often overlooked by both sides in this bitter struggle, forgotten by all but few specialists, is creation science's venerable history, which may offer valuable lessons for our time. From the rise of modern biology in the 1600s until Darwin's day, almost all scientists believed that species were created by God, in part because of the scientists' intellectual heritage, in part because the evidence for different view was still weak. (83) Until the middle of the 1800s, many scientists were active supporters of the various forms of creationism. The term creationism, as used in this article, is the belief that the basic forms of life were intelligently designed by being transcendent to humans (Johnson, Darwin on Trial 3-4). Diamond notes that one of the first of many creation scientists was Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680), described as a German Jesuit who wrote some thirty learned books about everything from hieroglyphs to magnets. Like his contemporaries, he regarded Genesis not as metaphor but as fact. Kircher was sure that science could only strengthen the faithful in their beliefs by making clear the ways in which the Lord worked his miracles (83). Beginning primarily with the works of certain prominent philosophers in the late 1700s, the dominant scientific view of scientists on origins slowly changed. As Desmond King-Hele concluded in Erasmus Darwin, After 1794, statements of the principle of natural selection and theories of evolution came fairly thick and fast (75). A crucial event that propelled this change was the publication of Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species in 1859. Darwin argued that all present and past forms of life evolved over long periods of time without creator's intervention (Pennock 69-70, 312, 334). The Origin took the world by storm, and since then, creationism rapidly lost ground, especially among scientists (Numbers, Creationism 164). By the late 190Os, most prominent scientists embraced some form of biological evolution - first theistic evolution, and later, with few exceptions, naturalism or atheistic evolution (Larson and Witham 313). As Steven Weinberg notes in Dreams of Final Theory, most scientists today do not give any credence to the creation worldview. Only five percent (about 10,000) of all working scientists accept the view that God created the first humans less than 10,000 years ago (Witham 33). Conversely, among conservative Christians, Jews, and Muslims, creationism has remained strong (Morris, The Long War 231; Overman 1-46). Studies consistently find that over half of all persons in America accept strict creationism, and most of the rest accept some form of progressive creationism or theistic evolution (Gallup and Poling 137-38; Bergman, Public Opinions 42-44). About twenty percent of high school teachers hold the creationist worldview, and the number of college professors who accept the creationist label is estimated to be between ten and twenty percent (Bergman, The Attitude 118-23. See also Shankar; Affannato; Buckner; Elgin; Brown; and Clark). Henry Morris notes that one can now find nucleus of genuine creationists on almost every college and university faculty in the country. They tend to be quiet about it or, if vocal, usually [are] persecuted for it, but they are there! Such condition would have been unheard of 40 years ago, when I was almost alone as creationist faculty member in the secular university world, so far as I could determine. (Morris, History of 258) Nineteenth-century ministers often criticized evolution from the pulpit, but relatively few scientists became actively involved in the anti-Darwin movement until the early 1920s. …
