Abstract
A 7-year-old Australian boy known as BI, who has missed the visual processing centre of his brain, has remarkably well-preserved vision, according from Inaki-Carril Mundinano at Monash University in Melbourne. In a series of tests run by Mundinano's team, BI scored perfectly when asked to name objects, identify colours and discriminate between images of faces. He could also identify happy, fearful and neutral faces, and grasp different-sized blocks placed in front of him. Using MRI brain scanning, the team found that another area of the boy's brain appears to have taken over the role of seeing.
