Abstract

In order to acquaint readers with the most intriguing ideas and stories about calculus, the author expounded on the development and significance of calculus from the perspective of applied mathematicians in way of images, metaphors, and anecdotes and, also, introduced some of the most exquisite equations and proofs in the history of calculus. Infinite Powers, authored by the renowned American mathematician Steve Strogatz, consists of 11 chapters in five parts—the history of calculus, fundamental concepts, practical applications in everyday life, philosophical implications, and future prospects. This work is an inspiring popular science piece aimed at familiarizing readers with the fundamental knowledge of calculus and its applications in daily life. The book is characterized by its lively language and rich examples, delving deeply into calculus applications across various domains, allowing readers to perceive the charm and potency of the scientific discipline.
