Abstract
The book was originally published twenty-four years ago with a different title "Adaptive Learning and Pattern Recognition Systems" (J. M. Mendel and K-S. Fu' Eds). Now, it has been reedited by Mendel and dedicated to the memory of King-Sun Fu. The book is supposed to provide a bridge between today's "second wave" of neural networks and the "first wave" that occurred in the sixties. It is organized in three parts: pattern recognition, adaptive and learning systems, and special topics. Such organization is well conceived, though, in my opinion, the final part is today so relevant that it would perhaps have deserved a more specific title.
