Abstract
This chapter addresses bone tissue grafting and tissue engineering approaches, beginning with use of bone graft and bone graft substitutes and their functions as bioactive scaffolds for bone regeneration. How bone tissue engineering has evolved from bone substitutes to resorbable polymeric scaffolds is discussed. Differences in strategies that promote autologous healing by providing a bioactive scaffold, provide autologous or allogeneic cells to assist in autologous healing, or jump-start healing by growing tissue ex vivo, are discussed. A review of preclinical and clinical models to assess the effectiveness of bone tissue engineering strategies is included.
