Abstract
Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) reside in a perivascular niche in adult bone marrow in which endothelial cells and LepR+ stromal cells are critical sources of niche factors, including SCF, that promote HSC maintenance. The bone marrow changes after myeloablation but how this affects the composition of the niche is unknown. While adipocytes are rare in normal young adult bone marrow they accumulate after irradiation. We discovered that this reflects increased proliferation by Adipoq-Cre/ER+ stromal cells after irradiation.
