The American Civil War was fought between 1861 and 1865. Over 6oo,ooo died in this multilevel conflict between the Northern States (the Union) and the Southern States (the Confederacy), and the memory of the war continues to this day, preserved in the landscape, in historical parks and sites, in music, the written word, the visual arts, in stories passed down orally, and in its effects on later generations.
