Abstract

Blood monocyte phagocytosis was studied in vitro using sheep red blood cells, latex particles and Staphylococcus albus. Depression of phagocytosis was found in mild and severe burns, associated with monocyte leucopenia in the severe group. The aetiology of these changes is discussed with reference to the morphological changes found and possible roles of the monocyte-macrophage system in this type of injury. Damage to, or depletion of, blood monocytes probably contributes to the diminished host resistance to infection present in these patients.
