Abstract

The World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines on drawing blood: best practices in phlebotomy [1] were developed in 2010. They incorporated two hand hygiene moments, 1 and 4, from ‘My five moments for hand hygiene’ [2,3] highlighted in the WHO guidelines on hand hygiene in health care [4]. An observational study of phlebotomy practices identified patient safety concerns due to inappropriate glove use and reduced hand hygiene compliance by phlebotomists. Therefore, the WHO guidelines for phlebotomy [1] were revisited to incorporate Moments 2 and 3.
