To identify the challenges associated with using journaling as a method of data collection and to offer strategies for effectively managing those challenges. While journaling can be used for a variety of reasons, in the context of this paper, journaling refers to the process of participants sharing thoughts, ideas, feelings and experiences through writing and/or other media. Journaling is used in phenomenological research studies to record participant experiences in their natural contexts. The findings are based on the experiences of the researchers during a qualitative study that explored the experiences of lesbian mothers and used journaling as one method of data collection. This is a methodological paper. Three main challenges affect journaling as a method of data collection: poor participation, feeling exposed and staying on track. Six strategies to promote participation in journaling are: coaching participants, limiting the journaling period, providing follow-up contact, promoting comfort, ensuring safety and providing clear content expectations. Each strategy is discussed and methods of implementing the strategies are offered. Journaling as a method of data collection has long been accepted as a valid method of accessing rich qualitative data. By acknowledging the common challenges associated with the process of journaling that are experienced by the participants, researchers employing this data collection method can promote constructive and valuable participation. Further research examining participants' experiences of journaling as a method of qualitative data collection would be useful in determining challenges, barriers and benefits of the method.

<p>This paper aims to fill a gap between textbooks and papers on data collection methods. Many undergraduate study programs include modules on data collection methods. They provide students with systematic insight into data collection methods. However, a few years later, when students want to apply this training in their research, they may have forgotten unapplied parts! Because researchers might not devote themselves to adequate re-study of data collection textbooks, they sometimes choose a data collection method without a systematic view of other methods and the wider framework of data collection. Researchers might devote their available time to selective study about applying their chosen data collection method, but a loss of overall methodological insight might have negative implications for the research. The present paper aims to help with this problem. It provides a researcher companion of data collection and validation methods in a systematic textbook style but within a concise paper with essential details and examples. The paper can be used by researchers of different disciplines as a standalone methodological guide or a legend for informed searching of more detail in relevant references.</p>

Tinjauan Hukum Islam terhadap Kewarisan Kelem pada Masyarakat Kecicang Islam
  • Jul 14, 2021
  • ISLAMITSCH FAMILIERECHT JOURNAL
  • Ijtihadul Umam

Kelem hereditary is one of the customary laws in the matter of the inheritance rights of grandchildren which is the result of the agreement of former community leaders in Kecicang Islam Village, Bungaya Kangin Village, Bebandem District, Karangasem Regency, Bali Province. Kelem comes from the Balinese language which means drowned. In terms of hereditary, kewarisan kelem means a grandson whose father or mother (the heir) died before the grandfather or grandmother (the inheritor) is said to have drowned (blocked) from inheritance rights because it is hindered by the parents’ brothers who are still alive. This is in contrast to the hereditary law system in Indonesia in the form of Islamic Law Compilation article 185 paragraph 1, which explains that, the heir who dies before the inheritors can be replaced by his child. The research method used was field research. This research was a descriptive analytic with juridical normative approach. Data collection methods used include interviews and documentation. After the data was collected, it was analyzed in a descriptive qualitative way with the 'urf and the theory of substitute heirs. The results showed that kelem hereditary is one of the customary laws as the result of the agreement of former community leaders in Kecicang Islam. This contradicts both Sunni and Shi'ah hereditary law systems as well as the hereditary laws in Indonesia.

Back projection reconstruction has been implemented to get the dynamical image in electrical impedance tomography. However the implementation is still limited in method of adjacent data collection and circular object element model. The study aims to develop the methods of back projection as reconstruction method that has the high speed, accuracy, and flexibility, which can be used for various methods of data collection and model of the object element. The proposed method uses the forward problem solution as the operator of filtered and back projection matrix. This is done through a simulation study on several methods of data collection and various models of the object element. The results indicate that the developed method is capable of producing images, fastly and accurately for reconstruction of the various methods of data collection and models of the object element.

  • Jul 24, 2020
  • Indian Journal of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology
  • Nurma Fuji Astutik + 1 more

Early marriage is a marriage conducted by teenagers under the age of 20 who are not ready to carry out a marriage. Indonesia ranks 37th in the world and 2nd in ASEAN as a country with high rates of young marriage. Marriage at a young age affects physical, psychological and social health. The tradition of getting married at a young age is still high in Sumenep Regency. Sumenep Regency occupies the first position on the island of Madura with 2692 married women <20 years old. This happens because the tradition of young marriage still continues as a result of low individual understanding and supported by social factors. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship of individual factors and social factors to the mother’s intention to continue early marriage tradition in Sumenep Regency. This is a descriptive study using a qualitative approach. The method of data collection was performed qualitatively using in-depth interview and observation methods. The research instruments in this study were observation sheets and interview guidelines with a total of 32 main and key informants. Data analysis was performed using qualitative analysis including content analysis, analytical procedure, and translations. This study shows that in Sumenep, mothers with history of experiencing young age marriage had the intention to continue the tradition of early marriage. The mothers’ intention to continue the ealy marriage tradition is formed due to the existence of individual factors of past behavior and social factors including education, employment, culture, first marriage and religion. The conclusion of this study is that early marriage will continue. Therefore, cross-sector collaboration between central and regional governments, community leaders and related agencies (KUA and Health center) to reduce and prevent the occurrence of marriage of young children is required.

An analysis of the effectiveness of focus groups as a method of qualitative data collection with Chinese populations in nursing research
  • Sep 1, 1998
  • Journal of Advanced Nursing
  • Dr Sheila Twinn

Although there has been a significant increase in the use of focus groups as a qualitative method of data collection in health and nursing research, literature on the use of this method with Chinese populations is limited. This study was therefore undertaken to explore the contribution of focus groups as a method of data collection amongst Hong Kong Chinese women. The study involved the comparison of the data obtained from two concurrent research studies which both employed case study design and focus groups as a major method of data collection. In both studies the samples involved Chinese women. The findings demonstrate that factors such as recruitment to the groups and interaction of group members did not adversely affect the quality of the data. Indeed the depth of data obtained on a range of sensitive topics suggests that the use of focus groups provides an effective method of collecting qualitative data with the Chinese populations in the described studies. However, a particular issue to emerge from this method of collection relates to the complexity of transcription and translation of the Chinese data which in the author's view has implications for the quality of the data. This finding indicates the importance of undertaking data analysis in the language of the interview, rather than that of the translated data, to avoid compromising the quality of data obtained from non-English speaking populations.

Data collection techniques are participant observation, open-ended interviews and unstructured interviews, and documentation Data analysis techniques use spiral model data analysis. Data validity testing techniques used triangulation of data sources and data collection methods. The theory used to analyze the research results uses Max Weber's social action theory. Social relations that exist between weavers and small and medium industries (SMEs) of Bima weaving consist of friendship, openness, empathy, trust, help (sympathy). The economic relationship that emerged was that the Bima weaving SMEs helped weavers in fulfilling domestic household needs, education of weavers' children, protection of weavers even though the production of woven fabrics was small.
