Black Theatre was officially established in Nova Scotia in 1967, when the late Dr. Evelyn Garbary, a former Abbey Theatre and London stage actress and my great mentor, entertained the idea of bringing together a group of people to present the play Coming Here to Stay. Written by her friend David Griffin, it told the story of the refugee Blacks who immigrated to Nova Scotia from America between 1812 and 1830.
