Abstract

Birthdate has been shown to have an important effect on both professional sport and academic attainment. This paper demonstrates that birthdate effects are present in ratings of sport performance for 16‐year‐old pupils taking a GCSE in Physical Education. The birthdate effect in ratings of sport performance is present for both male and female pupils. In addition, birthdate effects are present in the written components of the examination. Explanations for the birthdate effect in ratings of sport performance are put forward. Implications of the birthdate effect in ratings of sport performance are discussed with reference to public examinations, physical education teachers and the development of sporting talent.
