Abstract
BIOSTRAT is a program for simulating the stratigraphic occurrence of marine fossils in single outcrops or in cross-sections through a sedimentary basin. It is primarily for use as a forward model, but could be used to inverse model a particular outcrop or basin. BIOSTRAT combines a random-branching model of evolution with a Gaussian ecological model of species with respect to water depth. Several modules are included that facilitate using the output of the sedimentary basin model, STRATA. BIOSTRAT has applications in the testing of biostratigraphic methods, for exploring how evolutionary events get filtered by the stratigraphic record, for testing paleoecological statistical methods, and for understanding how patterns of morphologic change in fossil species are distorted by the processes of sediment accumulation.
