Abstract

Cervical mediastinoscopy is used for exploration of lymph nodes of paratracheal mediastinum. The main indication is invasive staging of lung cancer, especially in patients evaluated for possible inclusion in neoadjuvant treatment trials. In these patients frozen sections are often necessary to establish the indication for immediate thoracotomy or positioning of an implantable venous access device for chemotherapy. Diagnosis of isolated enlarged lymph nodes represents the other more frequent indication of mediastinoscopy. In these cases frozen sections are mainly performed to assess the adequateness of samples and to determine the need of complementary laboratory technics.
