Abstract

Phase formation processes occurring in the open systems CaX 2–M 2HPO4 /M 3PO4–Na2SiO3–H2O are analyzed. It is shown on the basis of the computed values of ΔG of crystallization that it is possible for mixtures of hydroxyapatite and calcium silicate to form in alkaline solutions. It is shown that the precipitation of calcium carbonate is just as likely in ‘wet’ synthesis in air. Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, CaSiO3, and CaCO3 exhibit bioactivity, which makes it possible to use the system studied for the production of polyphase materials for bone tissue engineering.
