Abstract

Petrographic and biostratigraphic analyses were conducted in the Lower Miocene Hadrukh Formation from the subsurface of NE Saudi Arabia on cuttings, sidewall core and conventional core samples. Six biofacies were identified, associated to shallow-marine, lagoon, coastal sabkha and fluvial conditions. Biota generally is fairly sparse. Major biocomponents are ostracods, euryhaline benthic foraminifera (rotaliids and miliolids), dinoflagellates, moluscan shells, dasycladales, Pediastrum taxa and charophytes. Co-occurrence of Neorotalia viennoti and Distatodinium species suggests an early Miocene age, not younger than the Aquitanian.
