Abstract
Of late, drainage problems and salinity development in various irrigation project areas are felt and they draw the attention in the recent past. Drainage is highly necessary on flat wetlands, which is characterized by very gentle slope (less than 2%) and water stagnation. The excessive seepage, wasteful use of water - over irrigating crops, lack of drainage have led into water logging and this is a matter of concern in all our major command areas. Water logging and rise of water table lead to mobility of soluble salts from deeper layers to soil surface. There by resulting in salinization initially and then into sodicity. The conventional means of drainage involves construction of drainage channels, lining of channels, removing the water through pipes and establishing controlling and regulatory structures which require a huge investment and time for implementation of the work. The best alternative to conventional means of drainage is Bio Drainage.
