Abstract

Extracts of the basidiomycete Lycoperdon pyriforme yielded 4-methoxy-benzene-1-azoformamide (1) and 4-methoxybenzene-1-ONN-azoxyformamide (2), which posses namaticidal activity against the parasitic nematode Meloidogyne incognita but not against the saprophytic nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, and the chlorinated derivative 3,5-dichloro-4-methoxybenzene-1-ONN-azoxyformide (3). Compound 3, which is less active towards nematodes but more cytotoxic compared to 1 and 2, is new and its structure was elucidated by spectroscopic techniques.
