A Preliminary Investigation Into the Effect of Kinesio and Athletic Tape on Skin Blood Flow Changes

PURPOSE: The use of Kinesio Tape (KT) is gaining popularity throughout the allied health professions and claims to have several benefits such as increasing blood and lymphatic flow, strengthening of weak muscles, decreasing pain, increasing proprioception and repositioning of subluxed joints. However, little to no scientific research has been performed to validate any of these claims. One claim is that KT increases blood flow to the taped area in order to help expedite the healing process. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine if blood flow changes occurred in the upper arm with KT application compared to regular athletic tape (AT). METHODS: Ten healthy subjects (age: 21.1 ± 1.6 yrs; height: 172.2 ± 13.4 cm; mass: 72.3 ± 24.0 kg) volunteered for the study. All subjects completed two experimental trials (KT or AT) on separate days performed in a counter-balanced order. Each experimental trial consisted of three sessions and an exercise regimen. The first session was a 20 minute baseline period (seated-rest, no tape), the second session consisted of a 20 minute period after the application of tape (seated-rest, AT or KT). A submaximal exercise regimen (standing bicep curls, 3 sets × 10 reps with a pre-determined dumbbell weight with a one-minute rest between sets) followed session two. Each subject's dumbbell weight was determined in an orientation visit, where they chose a weight in which they could perform 3 sets × 10 reps with fatigue occurring at the end of the third set. Finally, the third session consisted of a 20 minute recovery period following the exercise regimen (seated-rest, AT or KT). During the experimental sessions, skin blood flow was measured continuously via a LASER Doppler probe adhered over the biceps brachii. Skin blood flow data were expressed as a percent change from the baseline value and were not reported during the exercise session due to motion artifacts. A two-way (condition × time) ANOVA with repeated measures on both factors was used to test for statistical significance. RESULTS: There was no condition X time interaction or main effect for condition; however there was a main effect for time (F(1.3,9.3) = 4.34, P = 0.05). Pairwise comparisons using a LSD adjustment showed that skin blood flow was significantly lower (−4.9%) after tape application compared to baseline (P = 0.05). In addition, there was a tendency for skin blood flow to be greater (36.0 %) during the post-exercise recovery period compared to baseline (P = 0.06) (See Figure 1). Conclusion: Our results show that there was no difference in blood flow with either tape or conditions. Practical Application: Using KT for increasing blood flow for rehabilitating or strengthening muscles of athletes may not be more beneficial than regular AT. It appears that the application of either tape may change blood flow to the targeted area, but most likely as a result of prior exercise.

What does literature teach about digital pathology? A bibliometric study in Web of Science

Digital pathology (DIPA) has become an effective discipline that generates a graphic environment to diagnose and interpret the pathological information of people. When analyzing the existing literature on DIPA, a knowledge gap was produced by not reporting a study that has bibliometrically analyzed the publications on the subject. The objective of this study is to analyze the scientific production and performance achieved by the term digital pathology in the Web of Science (WoS) database. For this, a methodology based on bibliometrics has been carried out, complemented by the scientific mapping technique to search, recorder, analyze and predict the scientific literature on the state of question. We have worked with an analysis unit of 1222 documents reported from WoS database. The results show that there is no research topic in the field of study of DIPA that stands out from the rest. A conceptual gap can be observed in the thematic development, given that there is no theme that is repeated in all periods, where the connections are more thematic than conceptual. There are key documents for different topics. The main themes have been very different over the years like telepathology and artificial intelligence.

A Bibliometric Study on the Mechanical Science and Engineering Researches in Taiwan

Knowledge productions within the academe have been strongly focused on publication in journals included in the Thomson’s ISI Web of Science (WOS) database. Within the WOS database, mechanical science and engineering researches ranks among the top five of the most highly presented topics in Taiwan. Since 1997 mechanical science research contributions have been steadily growing. To date there are a total of 9,576 mechanical science articles included in the WOS database with a contributing author coming from Taiwan. Many bibliometric theorists have proposed that within a specific field of study, 80 % of the articles are contributed by 20 % of the field’s source journals. In light of this issue, the current study seeks to understand what type of publication distribution exists in the pool of mechanical science researches in Taiwan. The understanding of publication trends is able to bring about valuable insights regarding significant contributions of key journals and the corresponding articles within them. Key finding shows that mechanical science researches follows the majority trend of older articles having the most number of citations, while, newer articles having a significant higher number of authors and references. Lastly, distribution analysis shows that the mechanical science researches in Taiwan behave in a likely pattern somewhat similar to the Revised Welch Vitality Curve. Additional, insights and trends are also provided to have a more complete picture of the mechanical science and engineering research field in Taiwan.

Analysis of Electric Vehicle Battery State Estimation Using Scopus and Web of Science Databases from 2000 to 2021: A Bibliometric Study

This paper presents a bibliometric analysis of battery state estimation in electric vehicles. In this paper, a quick study is performed on the top global research contributors, funding agencies, and affiliate universities or institutes performing research on this topic while also finding the top keyword searches and top authors based on the most citations in the field of electric vehicles. Trend analysis is done by using the SCOPUS and Web of Science (WOS) databases (DB) from the period of 2000 to 2021. Battery state estimation plays a major role in the battery present state based on past experience. Battery available charge and health knowledge is a must for range estimation and helps us acknowledge if a battery is in useful condition or needs maintenance or replacement. A total of 136 documents in SCOPUS and 1311 documents in Web of Science were analyzed. Through this bibliometric analysis, we learn the top authors, country, publication journal, citation, funding agency, leading documents, research gap, and future trends in this research direction. The author Xiong Rui has the most publications, and he is working at the Beijing Institute of Technology, China. The most common institution is the Beijing Institute of Technology, and China is the most highly contributing country in this research. Most of the publications are conference types in SCOPUS DB and article types in WOS DB. The National Natural Science Foundation of China provides the most funding. The journal Energies has the most publications related to this field. The most cited works are by the authors M.A. Hannan and L.G. Lu in SCOPUS and WOS DB, respectively. A statistical analysis of the top ten countries’ productivity results is also discussed.

Evaluation of The Psychiatric Research Output From Turkey Via Web Of Science Database: A Bibliometric Analysis

Background: Global scientific research output is continuously accelerating. Although psychiatric scientific output is increasing, factors such as health systems, scientific programs and financial supports that vary between countries lead to varied levels of contribution. This cross sectional bibliometric study aims to analysis the articles bibliometrically which conducted by researchers from Turkey and indexed in SCI-E index of the Web of Science (WoS)database in the category of Psychiatry. Methods: According to 2019 data, in the WoS database, journals in the Psychiatry category and indexed in the SCI-E were determined. Publications from Turkey that were published in these journals was determined. For each publication, all information relevant to the analysis was exported to Microsoft Excel and EndNote Desktop. Also, VOSviewer software was used to create a collaboration and word co-occurrence network. Results: There were 5293 publications which have at least one author from Turkey. Only 774 articles (14.62%) were written as international collaborations. The authors from Turkey were collaborating with the researchers from 66 diffrent countries and USA was leading these countries with 420 publications (%7.93), followed by England (3.3%) and Germany (2.4), respectively. The total number of citations was 53931 for these publications (mean: 10.19±22.51). The most prolific institution is Istanbul University while the most frequently selected journal by Turkish authors is Psychiatry and Clinical Psychopharmacology. Conclusions: Bibliometric studies are crucial in evaluating domain specific research and in planning for efficient use of limited resources. Psychiatric literature from Turkey greatly increased within the last two decades. Kinesio Taping in Treatment and Prevention of Sports Injuries

Kinesio tape (KT) is an elastic therapeutic tape used for treating sports injuries and a variety of other disorders. Chiropractor, Dr Kenso Kase, developed KT taping techniques in the 1970s. It is claimed that KT supports injured muscles and joints and helps relieve pain by lifting the skin and allowing improved blood and lymph flow. The profile of KT rose after the tape was donated to 58 countries for use during the 2008 Olympic Games, and was seen on high-profile athletes. Practitioners are asking whether they should use KT over other elastic adhesive tapes. The aim of this review was to evaluate, using meta-analysis, the effectiveness of KT in the treatment and prevention of sports injuries. Electronic databases including SPORTDiscus, Scopus, MEDLINE, ScienceDirect and sports medicine websites were searched using keywords 'kinesio taping/tape'. From 97 articles, ten met the inclusion criteria (article reported data for effect of KT on a musculoskeletal outcome and had a control group) and were retained for meta-analyses. Magnitude-based inferences were used to assess clinical worth of positive outcomes reported in studies. Only two studies investigated sports-related injuries (shoulder impingement), and just one of these involved injured athletes. Studies attending to musculoskeletal outcomes in healthy participants were included on the basis that these outcomes may have implications for the prevention of sporting injuries. The efficacy of KT in pain relief was trivial given there were no clinically important results. There were inconsistent range-of-motion outcome results, with at least small beneficial results seen in two studies, but trivial results in two other studies across numerous joint measurements. There was a likely beneficial effect for proprioception regarding grip force sense error, but no positive outcome for ankle proprioception. Seven outcomes relating to strength were beneficial, although there were numerous trivial findings for quadriceps and hamstrings peak torque, and grip strength measures. KT had some substantial effects on muscle activity, but it was unclear whether these changes were beneficial or harmful. In conclusion, there was little quality evidence to support the use of KT over other types of elastic taping in the management or prevention of sports injuries. KT may have a small beneficial role in improving strength, range of motion in certain injured cohorts and force sense error compared with other tapes, but further studies are needed to confirm these findings. The amount of case study and anecdotal support for KT warrants well designed experimental research, particularly pertaining to sporting injuries, so that practitioners can be confident that KT is beneficial for their athletes.

A bibliometric study of vascularized fibular grafting technique

Aims: Vascularized fibula graft (VFG) technique is one of these “gold standard” techniques in bone regeneration. Although there have been several bibliometrics studies in orthopedics, there haven’t been any on VFGs. By identifying the gaps in previous research, we sought to provide light on the scientific evolution of VFGs and provide direction for future investigations. Methods: In this bibliometric study, the Web of Science (WOS) database was used to access publications on VFG published between 1986-2022. A literature search was performed with selected keywords. The dataset obtained was downloaded from the WOS database as an output. This output was analyzed with VOSviewer and Biblioshiny tools. Results: A total of 430 documents on VFG included the study. A mean of 11.9 articles/year was published on VFG. The first article on VFG published in 1986. Since 2005, there has been an increasing trend in the number of articles and citations. The year with the highest number of both publications (n=32) and citations (n=756) was 2021. The publications on VFG have cited a total of 7300 times, an average of 16.98 citations per publication. Total 51 countries contributed to publications on the VFG between 1986-2022. The United States of America (USA) was identified as the global leader in terms of the number of publications (n=91, 21.163%), followed by Japan (n=58, 13.488%) and China (n=56, 13.023%). The USA had 91 manuscripts and 2162 citations with an H-index:29 and Japan had 58 manuscripts and 1145 citations with an H-index:22. Conclusion: The literature on VFG is quite limited. Most of the publications are from developed countries. Studies should be supported for this method that can be used in the treatment of many diseases, especially in developing countries.

Bibliometric analysis of bibliometric studies in the field of tourism and hospitality

PurposeThis study aims to contribute to the relevant body of knowledge by examining the bibliometric studies related to tourism and hospitality indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) database from a bibliometric perspective (evaluative and relational techniques).Design/methodology/approachThe WoS database was used to obtain studies to be reviewed. A total of 136 studies were analyzed and visualized in terms of evaluative and relational techniques, and a subject categorization was made.Findings“Tourism management” and “tourism and hospitality” are the two fields of research where bibliometric studies are carried out more frequently. Evaluative techniques were used in most studies while relational techniques, such as co-word, co-author, co-citation analysis and bibliographic coupling, were performed less. Relational techniques indicate that the words “bibliometric analysis” and “tourism” are frequently used together in the studies examined; the most common authorship cooperation is between China and USA.Research limitations/implicationsThis study provides an overview of bibliometric studies in tourism and hospitality literature. It expands the previous literature and shows study topics that are more focused by examining the abstracts and contents of articles published in journals in different WoS categories.Practical implicationsFindings related to evaluative and relational techniques can serve as useful information for researchers, who are new to the field.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the current knowledge accumulation by its lack of year, country, region and language limits.

COVID-19 and Pregnancy: Citation Network Analysis and Evidence Synthesis.

BackgroundCOVID-19 spread quickly around the world shortly after the first outbreaks of the new coronavirus disease at the end of December 2019, affecting all populations, including pregnant women.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between different publications on COVID-19 in pregnancy and their authors through citation networks, as well as to identify the research areas and to determine the publication that has been the most highly cited.MethodsThe search for publications was carried out through the Web of Science database using terms such as “pregnancy,” “SARS-CoV-2,” “pregnant,” and “COVID-19” for the period between January and December 2020. Citation Network Explorer software was used for publication analysis and VOSviewer software was used to construct the figures. This approach enabled an in-depth network analysis to visualize the connections between the related elements and explain their network structure.ResultsA total of 1330 publications and 5531 citation networks were identified in the search, with July being the month with the largest number of publications, and the United States, China, and England as the countries with the greatest number of publications. The most cited publication was “Clinical characteristics and intrauterine vertical transmission potential of COVID-19 infection in nine pregnant women: a retrospective review of medical records” by Chen and colleagues, which was published in March 2020. Six groups identified as being close in the citation network reflect multidisciplinary research, including clinical characteristics and outcomes in pregnancy, vertical transmission, delivery mode, and psychological impacts of the pandemic on pregnant women.ConclusionsThousands of articles on COVID-19 have been published in several journals since the disease first emerged. Identifying relevant publications and obtaining a global view of the main papers published on COVID-19 and pregnancy can lead to a better understanding of the topic. With the accumulation of scientific knowledge, we now know that the clinical features of COVID-19 during pregnancy are generally similar to those of infected nonpregnant women. There is a small increase in frequency of preterm birth and cesarean birth, related to severe maternal illness. Vaccination for all pregnant women is recommended. Several agents are being evaluated for the treatment of COVID-19, but with minimal or no information on safety in pregnancy. These results could form the basis for further research. Future bibliometric and scientometric studies on COVID-19 should provide updated information to analyze other relevant indicators in this field.

Research Status Quo in Traditional Mongolian Medicine: A Bibliometric Analysis on Research Documents in the Web of Science Database.

Objective In this study, the current state of research on traditional Mongolian medicine (TMM) through a bibliometric analysis of research documents located in the Web of Science (WoS) database was assessed. Methods The WoS database was searched on September 2021 with the keywords “traditional Mongolian medicine.” Publications on TMM scientific research were included in this study, without any language limitations. Bibliometric data from such publications were retrieved from the WoS database. Full records with cited reference lists were descriptively analyzed. To assess trends in TMM research topics, authors' keywords were analyzed. A thematic evolution map based on coword analysis was suggested. To analyze research networks among co-authors, affiliations, or countries of the authors, collaboration networks were evaluated. The Bibliometrix R package (3.1) was used for the analysis. Results A total of 234 scientific publications were included in the analysis. The top three countries of origin of the corresponding authors were China (n = 153), Japan (n = 28), and South Korea (n = 9). The top three relevant affiliations of the authors in the included publications were “Inner Mongolia Medical University,” “Inner Mongolia University of Nationalities,” and “National University of Mongolia.” “Flavonoids,” “cytotoxicity,” “NMR,” and “Tibetan medicine” were the most frequently used keywords in the included documents. Most publications focused on the chemical analysis and mechanism of effects of Mongolian herbal medications. There were few publications on nonpharmacological interventions such as bloodletting or TMM diagnostics, which should be promoted in future publications. Conclusion There were only a limited number of publications on TMM identified through a search of the WoS database, using the keywords “Traditional Mongolian medicine.” More improved strategy for searching for TMM publications must be established. Research publications on TMM, especially regarding nonpharmacological interventions, need to be promoted. In addition, collaboration with researchers worldwide needs to be encouraged in the future.

A bibliometric analysis of quality research papers in Islamic finance: evidence from Web of Science

Purpose The purpose of this study is to provide quantitative information on the growth of Islamic finance literature. The study focused on publishing trends, countries producing research on Islamic finance, key authors, major contributing organizations, authorship patterns, keywords and articles with the highest citations. Design/methodology/approach Bibliometric analysis is applied to analyse the growth and publishing trends in Islamic finance literature. The Web of Science (WoS) database was used to extract bibliometric data covering the period 1939–2019 for Islamic finance literature. Findings The study finds that Islamic finance research has gained remarkable momentum in the literature. However, such growth is largely manifested in Malaysia because of a conducive atmosphere for this type of research. Interestingly, the study finds that the three most productive journals are located in the UK and Malaysia, while Professor M. Kabir Hassan from the University of New Orleans, the USA appears to head the list of authors with 23 publications on Islamic finance. Practical implications This study provides up-to-date literature on the current state of Islamic finance in the world; as a result, it supports the development of policies by the Islamic finance industry. The findings of the study also serve as a reference point for Islamic finance training and educational institutions. Originality/value Islamic finance is an emerging financial discipline; as such, there is a need for more awareness of this financial system in the world. Muslim-majority countries, especially Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Pakistan and Bahrain, have to include Islamic finance in their curriculum and establish research institutions and research journals. In addition, Arabic language journals should be indexed in WoS and/or Scopus to provide a high-quality publication platform. This study provides a more comprehensive bibliometric analysis on the growth of Islamic finance literature (1939–2019) in the WoS database; most of the prior studies have covered relatively few areas of focus and a lower range of years in some cases.

The Power of Total Quality Management in Manufacturing Industries Performance: A Sciento‐Bibliometric Analysis Using Theory Based Thematic Approaches

Total quality management (TQM) has emerged as a key tactic for enhancing the performance of manufacturing sector businesses across the globe. Thus, the purpose of this sciento‐bibliometric work is to comprehensively and systematically analyze patterns of publication, citation networks, impacts, and keywords for further research in the field. An extensive systematic literature review and network analysis have been conducted to fulfill the research purpose. A total of 429 published works from 2000 to 2024 were obtained from the Web of Science (WOS) database, of which 352 were considered for the final analysis. Publications, countries, sources, authors, organizations, co‐citations, and keywords were used as the primary units of analysis. To perform the sciento‐bibliometric analysis, VOSviewer and POP are used. To advance the findings, the theoretical frameworks such as resource‐based view (RBV), dynamic capabilities, and contingency are applied. The review identified the leading journals, influential authors, countries' contributions, institutions involved, and significant research gaps in this field. Preliminary findings suggest that while TQM has been widely studied in large companies, its influence on small and medium manufacturing remains underexplored. There is also a greater lack of empirical studies addressing the impacts of TQM on the sector in developing economies than in developed ones. Moreover, publications in this field are not only insufficient, but also it is declining after 2022. The bibliometric maps depict the evolution of TQM as a strategic resource, an adaptive capability, and a context‐dependent practice, aligned with these theoretical frameworks. The review was conducted solely using the WOS database from 2000 to 2024. Therefore, it is recommended that other researchers undertake comparable analyses using alternative, well‐established databases and different scenarios, as well as review techniques. The review is the first that systematically integrates sciento‐bibliometric analysis to examine publication patterns in the field, drawing on RBV, dynamic capabilities, and contingency theories. POP and VOSviewer bibliometric tools were employed for cleaning, citation analysis and visualization.

Kinesio Taping (KT) has emerged as a prominent therapeutic technique in sports medicine, recognized for its ability to alleviate pain, reduce edema, and support functional recovery in athletes. By mimicking the elasticity of human skin, KT provides dynamic support while allowing full range of motion, making it particularly advantageous for sports-related injuries. Studies indicate that KT promotes lymphatic drainage and reduces localized swelling by lifting the skin and improving interstitial space. This mechanism aids in the removal of metabolic waste and excess fluids, accelerating the healing process. Clinical applications of KT span a wide range of injuries, including chronic ankle instability, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, and shoulder dislocations. Research highlights its effectiveness in enhancing proprioceptive feedback, stabilizing joints, and reducing strain on affected muscles. Comparisons with other interventions, such as rigid taping and dry needling, reveal KT's superior adaptability and comfort for athletes engaged in dynamic activities. Moreover, KT has been shown to complement traditional rehabilitation protocols, offering psychological benefits by boosting confidence and encouraging active participation in recovery. Despite its widespread use, the efficacy of KT can vary based on factors such as application techniques, injury type, and individual patient characteristics. Ongoing research aims to refine protocols and better understand its mechanisms of action. Overall, KT has become an integral tool in sports injury management, offering a non-invasive and effective solution for pain and edema management while supporting functional recovery.
