Abstract
ABSTRACT This paper examines the route taken in 1891 by the ‘caravan of Sinhalese and Tamil people’, organised by the Hagenbeck company, which passed through Lviv, Odesa and Kyiv. Apart from initiating research on ethnic shows in modern-day Ukrainian lands, we focus on the complex relationship between ethnic-show business, racial knowledge production and popular education. We are particularly interested in the role ethnic shows played in the process of racialisation and the production of knowledge about the ethnic Other in Eastern Europe, as well as the relations between the ‘popular’ and the ‘scientific’.
