In this work, we center the importance of residential narrative in communicating about the “15-minute City” concept by presenting and interpreting the results of a local survey investigating interrelations between: neighborhood-level availability and accessibility to services and amenities; perceived quality of life; and place attachment, this last often being disregarded in this concept. The results, based on qualitative research carried out in Warsaw, document strong links between the first two, with the primary observed benefits being time- and effort-saving, followed by advantages concerning general life comfort, safety and walkability. Regarding place attachment, we identify a division of residents into the categories “stayers” and “movers”, which define their attitude irrespective of neighborhood convenience and quality of life perceived. Narratives emphatically attributed availability of public transport infrastructure an important role in contributing to life-quality, revealing the intensity and complexity of spatial interaction linking the neighborhood with the city-cum-metropolitan level. ...

Community responses to environmental threat: Place cognition, attachment, and social action
  • Dec 21, 2020
  • Nikolay L Mihaylov + 2 more

Place attachment (PA) is an important motivation to spend time in one's neighborhood, talking to neighbors sociably or about local issues, and rather than flee, to stay and fight—that is, to create social capital and participate in collective efforts to preserve or improve the community. Those efforts are often in response to some perceived threat to residents' health, safety, property, and/or quality of life, and to the very PAs that led to residents' community engagement. This chapter reviews, analyzes, and builds upon theory and research across multiple disciplines on residential community PA and its relationship to psychological and collective responses to environmental threats, with particular attention to energy exploration and extraction. We explore ways in which PA is shaped, nurtured, and experienced within the context of community, and what other community-focused cognitions and behaviors PA influences. The first half of this chapter is organized around the theoretical model of community PA and responses to environmental threats proposed in the prior edition. The current chapter emphasizes applications of community PA via two case studies of the role of PA, place cognition, and social action in response to "fracking" (hydraulic fracturing) for shale oil and gas in Bulgaria and the US.

The significance of the social and material environment to place attachment and quality of life: findings from a large population-based health survey

  • Jan Georg Friesinger + 2 more

BackgroundThere is an international public health interest in sustainable environments that promote human wellbeing. An individual’s bond to places, understood as place attachment (PA), is an important factor for quality of life (QoL). The material environment, such as access to nature (AtN), access to amenities (AtA), or noise, and the social environment, such as social support or loneliness, has the potential to influence PA. The aim of the present study was to explore the relationship between these factors and QoL.MethodsThe study relied on data from 28,047 adults from 30 municipalities in Southern Norway obtained from the Norwegian Counties Public Health Surveys in 2019. Latent regression analyses were used to examine the relationship between the material and social environmental factors and QoL, mediated by PA.ResultsWe found a relationship between social and material environmental factors and PA. Higher AtN and AtA scores were related to an increase in PA, whereas higher perception of noise problems was related to decreased PA scores. When social environment factors were added to the model, they were even stronger predictors of PA and, in turn, QoL through mediated effects. We also found a strong positive association between PA and QoL (unstandardized β = 0.88, 95% CI = 0.87–0.90, p < 0.001). The whole model explained 83% of the variance in PA and 65% of the variance in QoL.ConclusionsTaken together, the findings suggest the relevance of material and social environmental factors for PA and QoL. Therefore, research on public health and QoL should include place-sensitive variables.

The impact of urban renewal on place attachment: A framework to enhance social structures and resident satisfaction
  • May 1, 2026

  • Shuiyang Lin + 1 more

Amidst a growing awareness of the need for liveable and sustainable cities, urban renewal strategies are increasingly concerned with community well-being. Place attachment is a key element in understanding the impact of neighbourhood regeneration, as the resulting economic and social changes may positively or negatively affect the emotional ties that bind people and places together. Though widely studied in psychology and human geography, place attachment's potential in urban planning remains underexplored, especially in urban redevelopment or preservation. To overcome this gap, this study critically reviewed 124 relevant studies using thematic analysis and bibliometric visualisations to construct a framework of influence mechanisms between urban regeneration and place attachment. The bibliometric and thematic analyses reveal five main clusters: (A) place attachment and community dynamics, (B) creative urban design and public space, (C) gentrification and social change, (D) place identity and sustainable development, and (E) community health and quality of life, each representing critical dimensions of place attachment's manifestation in urban renewal. These clusters reveal the social and physical factors shaping place attachment, showing how they reinforce or diminish it and influence the success of renewal projects. Based on this, we introduce a place attachment assessment framework to guide future urban regeneration projects and ensure that urban regeneration strategies are inclusive and socially sustainable. The study highlights the critical need to address place attachment among urban regeneration, providing theoretical and practical guidance for improved understanding and methodological support towards community-oriented urban planning. • Systematically assesses how urban renewal reshapes place attachment across multiple dimensions. • Introduces an integrated assessment framework linking urban renewal processes with place attachment dynamics. • Derives planning guidance to strengthen social structure and improve resident satisfaction in renewal areas.

Support for Sustainable Community Tourism and Quality of Life: The Missing Mechanisms
  • Apr 22, 2025
  • Tourism Analysis
  • Haywantee Ramkissoon + 2 more

Tourism studies demand that residents’ place attachment and overall quality of life (QoL) be further investigated. Taking a multidisciplinary stand, this article tests the interplay of relationships between residents’ perceived social impacts, their trust in local government, place attachment, and its influence on their prosocial and proenvironmental behaviors, which Ramkissoon and her coauthors argue are important mechanisms to be explored in determining support for tourism and provide better QoL outcomes. Applying structural equation modeling (SEM) on a sample of 350 residents, results suggest that perceived social impacts positively influence trust in local government and place attachment; place attachment has a positive influence on prosocial and proenvironmental behaviors, which leads to support for tourism development. The latter positively influences residents’ overall QoL aligning with the United Nations’ SDGs. Theoretical and practical implications for sustainable community tourism are discussed. Finally, the article states a future research agenda for trust, place attachment, prosocial and proenvironmental collective engagement, and QoL research.

  • Haywantee Ramkissoon + 2 more

This research investigates the role residents’ place attachment plays in developing their trust in the government in the city of Budapest. Rooted in different domains such as politics, environmental, and social psychology and aligned with the related SDGs (goals 3, 11 16, 17), an integrative model of residents’ place attachment, trust in the local government, QoL, social impacts, and pro-social engagement is proposed, which the authors argue are important mechanisms to be explored in determining support for sustainable tourism development to promote responsible consumption and production (SDG 12). We applied SEM on a sample of 350 residents. Findings suggest that place attachment significantly influences residents’ trust in the local government, which also has a positive influence on quality of life. Quality of life has a significant influence on perceived social impacts, which strongly leads to pro-social engagement; pro-social engagement underpins support for tourism development. This paper sets a future research agenda for sustainable tourism by indicating its possible antecedents. Sustainable tourism development has important implications for the achievement of other sustainability goals. The study aligns well with the United Nations Tourism’s vision of tourism as an important driver of positive change for responsible consumption and advancing other SDGs.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN URBAN PARK LANDSCAPE PERCEPTION AND PLACE ATTACHMENT IN PARK CITY, CHINA
  • Jul 18, 2025
  • PLANNING MALAYSIA
  • Huang Menglan + 4 more

Based on the Park City concept proposed by the Chinese government in response to rapid urbanization, urban parks should be constructed to be open and shared to enhance place attachment. Research indicates that visitors’ perceptions of urban green space benefit their management and people’s quality of life. However, how the landscape perception of urban parks is associated with residents’ place attachment is poorly understood. This study aimed to gain more empirical insights into the associations between the perceived quality of urban parks and the two components of public place attachment (i.e., place dependence and place identity) in Park City, China. An online survey collected 237 questionnaires from Huancheng Park visitors in Chengdu City (the pilot city of the Park City concept). The questionnaire included three parts: demographic characteristics, landscape perception (i.e., nature, serene, space, refuge, culture, prospect, and social), and a place attachment scale. Factor analysis and regression analyses were subsequently conducted. The results indicated that (1) landscape perception is more able to affect place identity than place dependence, (2) the dimensions of landscape perception (excluding space and social) had a significant positive effect on place attachment and place identity, and (3) the dimensions of landscape perception (except serene) had a significant positive effect on place dependence. Therefore, during construction, nature, culture, prospect, and space dimensions of urban park landscape perception should receive more attention to enhance the public sense of identity and belonging and promote Park City’s sustainable development.

The Effect of Leisure Involvement on Place Attachment: Flow Experience as Mediating Role
  • Jan 18, 2022

  • Hui Tao + 3 more

Leisure is an important way for residents to achieve well-being. As urbanization continues to accelerate and residents’ spiritual and cultural needs gradually increase, urban park leisure is becoming increasingly prominent in daily recreation, and recreational activities that meet residents’ short-term and frequent needs for leisure are becoming preferred. In this article, based on structural equation models, four representative urban parks in Beijing were selected as study areas to explore the relationships among three variables: leisure involvement, flow experience, and place attachment. The results showed that (1) leisure involvement had a significant positive effect on flow experience, (2) flow experience had a significant positive effect on place attachment, and (3) leisure involvement had both a significant direct effect on place attachment and an indirect effect mediated by flow experience. In addition, according to the empirical analysis of the influence of leisure behavior characteristics on leisure benefits, it was found that 1–3 h of leisure time in the park had the best leisure benefits. Therefore, a higher level of leisure involvement and a stronger flow experience can help to enhance residents’ place attachment; foster self-expression, identity, and self-actualization; and boost the benefits of leisure, which will eventually improve personal well-being and quality of life, construct and strengthen a sense of urban community, and fulfill people’s aspirations for a better life.

The Impacts of Friendly Designs on the Long-Term Sustainability of Modern Urban Parks
  • Jan 21, 2025
  • Sustainability
  • Yikun Wang + 1 more

Comprehensive urban parks should be continuously renewed to sustain their sustainability after being built, as they are vital to residents’ quality of life. However, previous studies have focused on a few special groups rather than all age groups. Therefore, understanding citizens’ needs for integrated friendly park designs can facilitate the sustainable development of parks. This study aimed to gather citizens’ opinions on improvements to friendly designs in parks and explore the impact of friendly designs on place attachment. The questionnaires used in this study were collected from visitors (n = 193) in Xuanwu Lake Park in September 2024, and the data were subsequently analyzed. The study found that enhancing friendly design in urban parks could help to increase visitors’ place attachment. Based on tourists’ feedback, our study proposed improvement strategies in terms of exceptionally and universally friendly design in order to better promote visitors’ place attachment. Enhancing visitors’ sense of place attachment effectively is crucial for policymakers and urban planners to help create all-age-friendly integrated urban parks and to promote sustainable renewal of urban environments.

Faith tourism in Turkey: place attachment, quality of life, and length of residency: a two-tiered model testing approach
  • May 12, 2026
  • Current Issues in Tourism
  • Gökhan Kadirhan + 2 more

This study examines the factors influencing residents’ support for tourism development within the Faith Tourism Corridor in Turkey using a two-tiered model testing approach. It specifically investigates the effects of place attachment on faith tourism perception, perceived quality of life, and support for tourism, while also exploring the moderating role of length of residency. Data were collected from 2,151 participants aged 18 and above using structured Likert-type scales through convenience sampling, both face-to-face and online. In the first phase, the model was tested in Mersin, Hatay, and Gaziantep; in the second phase, it was validated in Şanlıurfa and Mardin to assess its applicability under different contextual conditions. The findings reveal that place attachment has a positive effect on both faith tourism perception and support for tourism. While faith tourism perception enhances quality of life, quality of life has a negative but significant impact on support for tourism. Additionally, length of residency does not play a moderating role in these relationships. Overall, strengthening place attachment and effectively managing quality-of-life expectations are crucial for increasing residents’ support for tourism development.
