Abstract

Quantities of beryllium (Be) in root, stem, and leaf tissues of tobacco ( Nicotiana tabacum L. Md-609) plants grown in McMurtrey's nutrient solution with addition of 0.3, 1.0 and 3.0 mg 1 −1 Be were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometric analysis of beryllium trifluoroacetylacetonate (Be(tfa) 2) chelates. Quantification of Be was accomplished by comparing the areas of peak m/ e = 246 to a linear calibration curve for Be(tfa) 2 standard solutions. The method was sensitive to about 4 pg of Be. In the absence of the root-soil interface, the majority of Be was associated with tobacco roots. Toots from plants grown in media to which 0.3, 1.0 and 3.0 mg 1 −1 of Be had been added were associated with 374, 427 and 4280 μg Be/g dry wt. of tissue, respectively; leaves were associated with 2.14, 2.36 and 81.4 μg Be/g dry wt. tissue, respectively.
