Abstract

A brief history of beriberi heart disease is presented, together with a case report that includes physiologic data before and after recovery from the congestive state. The hemodynamic findings are compared with previously reported data, all indicating a low peripheral vascular resistance that results in a high cardiac output. Presumptive and definitive diagnostic criteria are postulated for the diagnosis of cardiovascular involvement in beriberi.
