Abstract

We aimed to identify treatment beliefs about psychotherapy and primary care for depression among people with depressive disorders. We conducted semi-structured interviews among 21 people with depression and different experiences with health care. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using content analysis. We identified beliefs about treatment outcome, processes, structural aspects and impacts. Beliefs about treatment processes concerned health care provider-patient-relationship, role of patients and health care providers. Respondents doubted GPs' diagnostic and treatment skills, perceived lack of GPs' and therapists time for treatment. More information about depression treatment including availability of treatment, side effects, primary care, GPs' competencies as well as the process of psychotherapy need to be provided.
