Abstract

This study aims to examine the factors that influence the behavioural intention towards e-wallet adoption and to examine the moderating effect of gender between these antecedents and satisfaction of adopting e-wallets, by using an extended ETAM model. The antecedents were identified as Perceived Usefulness, Perceived Ease of Use, Perceived Trust, Perceived Security and Social Influences. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, an online survey was conducted for data collection. The sample was chosen using purposive sampling and a total of 240 respondents from Selangor participated in this study. These respondents selected from the group of individuals known as The Developers, and they were all active e-wallet users. To examine the moderating role of gender, the data was analysed using partial least square-structural equation modelling. The results showed that there is a negative relationship between behavioural intention and the users’ satisfaction of e-wallet adoption. Similarly, Perceived Ease of Use, Social Influences and Perceived Security had no influence on Behavioural Intentions. In contrast, Perceived Usefulness and Perceived Trust influences Behavioural Intentions. Moreover, the findings show that gender has no impact on Perceived Usefulness, Perceived Ease of Use, Social Influences, Perceived Security, Perceived Trust and Behavioural Intentions. In conclusion, unlike previous findings, this study observed that users were most likely compelled to trust and use e-wallets as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, and this had influenced both male and female users. Hence, gender does not a play any impact on the decision to adopt e-wallets. However, the sample for this study was limited to Malaysians from Selangor, limiting the generalizability of the results to the entire Malaysian population at large. Furthermore, this study only examines the moderating role of gender. Future studies may include other demographic variables such as age, education, income, occupation, experience and household size. The findings help e-wallet service providers understand the relevance and influence of various antecedent variables on the intention to adopt this technology.
