Abstract

Chapter 8 describes how some LGBTQ adults deploy the normative and desirable statuses of married (with children) to get their parents to accept them. However, this type of conflict work is only accessible for white gay and lesbian cis people, reflecting deep inequalities that permeate social life. While the white cis gay and lesbian people in this chapter gain parental acceptance by becoming normal, this normalization works to further marginalize those who sit outside of these privileged statuses, especially for gender-expansive people of color, in terms of both family acceptance and broader liberation in society.
