Abstract

I began to suspect that Mandell et al1 were a bit weak in their herpetology when they left out the water moccasin or cottonmouth from their list of poisonous snakes in the United States. However, when they suggest that the 14.5% of venomous snakebites in Florida which could not be identified as crotalid or elapid bites might be caused by rear fanged colubrid envenomation, they are in real difficulty. According to Ditmars2(p125) the only species of rear fanged snake in Florida is the black-headed snake (Tantilla coronata coronata).
