Abstract

Relation between mutual restriction of grains in polycrystals and Bauchinger effect is studied analytically. Polycrystals are assumed to be composed of grains with different work-hardening rates. Discussion is made both on the linear and on the exponential stress-strain relations of grains. The mutual restriction of grains is represented quantitatively with constraint ratio. It follows that, owing to the non-uniform deformation of polycrystals, the absolute value of flow stress reduces when the direction of loading is reversed even if the flow stress of each grain is assumed to be dependent only on total strain. Discussion is made on factors affecting the decrease in flow stress of polycrystals. The amount of decrease in flow stress increases with an increase in the difference in stress-strain relations of grains.
