a token gesture of compliance with equal opportunity laws, they must be reinforced within the total academic program. That is, the academic program must not only up hold college level standards but must also uphold the com mitment implied in open admissions to help unprepared students reach those college-level standards. I would like to suggest that academic professors can incorporate tech niques into their teaching that will improve students' basic skills without detracting from course content.
