Abstract
This article presents essential principles of how to work successfully with older patients. The approach is an interdisciplinary one and the principles are relevant to a broad range of health care professionals including gerontologists, geriatricians, family physicians, social workers, nurses, and allied health personnel. The principles include a synthesis of some of the unique aspects influencing the diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of health care issues in older patients. It is recommended that trainees in geriatrics and gerontology have these principles presented and discussed by knowledgeable faculty members at the outset of their training experience.
