Abstract

My initial interest in persons of Mexican ancestry emerged from two bases: 1) a desire to learn about the history of the Spanish period in what is now the Southwestern United States, 2) a desire to obtain a command of the Spanish language. Both interests brought me into close association with Mexicans of varying economic and social backgrounds. Later, as I became aware of certain feelings of discrimination, I turned my attention to uncovering where, legally or extra-legally, these centered; and, when possible, why they existed. A more thoroughly planned and executed observation might lead to conclusions differing from those presented herein. However, on the basis of the work I have done, I feel justified in presenting what follows.t
