Abstract

AbstractThis paper discusses the tools available to Polish-Swedish legal translators dealing with the topic of bailiff enforcement. To start with, it discusses two institutions within the Polish legal system in the area of debt enforcement:komornik(bailiff) andbankowy tytuł egzekucyjny(bank enforcement title). It investigates both legal and pragmatic aspects of theirmodus operandi. The free market nature of their operation and insufficient government regulation frequently lead to injustice or is at least perceived as such by the public. Part 2 deals with two tools for legal translators. The first one is the method of parameterisation of legal terms, demonstrated in the example of the terms discussed. The analysis reveals that the termkomornikhas two equivalents in the Swedish language [kronofogde(n)(bailiff),Kronofogden(Enforcement Authority)] while the termbankowy tytuł egzekucyjny(bank enforcement title) has no equivalent. The other tool is corpus linguistics which allows extraction of collocations and other word combinations with the nounskomornik/kronofogde(n) discussed in the paper. It offers a useful list of verbs describing actions of a bailiff as well as reflects the commercial nature of this profession in its present form.
