Abstract

Recently we identified erythroblastic island (EI) macrophages in the mouse bone marrow (BM) and spleen as expressing F4/80, VCAM1, CD169, ERHR3 and Ly6G antigens and showed daily administration of the mobilising cytokine G-CSF blocks medullary erythropoiesis by depleting EI macrophages in the BM (Jacobsen et al, Exp Hem 2014, In Press). In the spleen of G-CSF-mobilised mice, EI macrophages and erythropoiesis were both increased. This indicates that EI macrophages can sense environmental stimuli to adjust erythropoiesis.
