Pedro Gorria et al. give evidence of the complex crystallization exhibited by a ferromagnetic Fe75Zr25 amorphous alloy upon heating above 800 K. A two-step process involving a polymorphic transformation is observed: amorphous → amorphous + Fe2Zr + Fe → Fe3Zr instead of the expected single transformation from the amorphous to the stable Fe3Zr crystalline phase. The authors show that the combination of thermo-magnetization measurements with neutron powder thermo-diffraction experiments is a very useful and powerful tool if a complete understanding of complex structural transformations of ferromagnetic amorphous alloys is pursued.
