Abstract

To the Editor.— The list of reasons for discouraging the use of walkers in infancy is growing. The recent article by Rieder et al1 rightfully indicts infant walkers as a significant cause of accidental trauma in the "preambulatory" age group. The use of walkers has been shown to have adverse developmental implications for both normal and abnormally developing children. A study by Kauffman and Ridenour2 demonstrated an abnormal electromyographically documented walking pattern in one randomly selected twin from each of six twin pairs who received a gait-training program consisting of two hours per day in a walker.
