Baby Catchers: a novel tank design to dramatically improve fry recovery of livebearing fishes
Livebearing fishes (Poeciliidae) are increasingly used as laboratory models, but their utility is hampered by high rates of filial cannibalism, which reduces fry recovery and increases husbandry demands. Traditional strategies, such as mesh tank inserts, rely on fry actively seeking refuge and are often ineffective. Here, we present a novel tank design called Baby Catchers, that use water flow to passively and automatically separate newborn fry from their mothers, fitting seamlessly into standard recirculating rack systems. We tested the efficacy of Baby Catcher tanks compared to open tanks and traditional mesh tank inserts using Poecilia parae, a livebearing species that is notorious for intense filial cannibalism. In short-term trials, Baby Catcher tanks yielded significantly higher initial fry counts on day 0 and day 2, while mesh inserts performed no better than open tanks. Over 10 days, negative binomial generalized linear models predicted substantial progressive fry loss in open tanks (~60% decline) and inserts (~68% decline), but no significant change in Baby Catchers, consistent with high fry survival. These results provide the first quantitative evidence that automated water-flow separation of fry dramatically reduces filial cannibalism in livebearing fishes. The Baby Catcher design offers a scalable, low-cost, and humane method for fry recovery, reducing technician effort, minimizing animal stress, and lowering barriers for research and breeding programs involving livebearing fishes (eg. swordtails, mollies, Poeciliopsis, mosquitofish, halfbeaks, etc.).

Cannibalism of small numbers of offspring by a parent has been proposed as an adaptive parental strategy, by providing energy to support parental care. However, there are few empirical studies to support this hypothesis. We conducted field and laboratory experiments to investigate partial filial cannibalism in Stegastes leucostictus, a coral reef fish with paternal care. Partial cannibalism was shown to be common, and males were found to remove developing embryos from throughout a clutch in a random pattern, rather than in the more aggregated pattern seen during embryo predation. Males that received a diet supplement grew faster than control males, but did not engage in less cannibalism. Also, males did not concentrate cannibalism on early embryonic stages with the highest energetic value. Experimental reduction of embryo densities was found to significantly increase embryo development rate and survival from egg deposition to hatching, and experimental reduction of oxygen levels significantly increased rates of partial filial cannibalism by males. Artificial spawning sites with low oxygen levels were avoided by spawning females, and cannibalism rates by males were higher. We propose that partial filial cannibalism serves as an adaptive parental strategy to low oxygen levels in S. leucostictus by increasing the hatching success of embryos.

Abstract.— Filial cannibalism has been identified as a constraint to the intensive production of swordtails Xiphophorus helleri. The objective of this study was to quantify the effect of refuge availability and quantity, broodstock population density, and adult sex‐ratio on the rate of cannibalism under culture conditions. The availability of shelter had a significant effect on the number of harvestable juveniles, while the quantity of shelter did not affect harvest size. At a constant sex‐ratio of 1:1 and broodstock population densities of four, ten, and 16 fish per 300‐L tank the amount of juveniles harvested was lowest at the stocking density of four fish per tank, but did not increase significantly when stocking density was raised from ten to 16 fish per tank. Rate of cannibalism was lowest at the lowest population density. At a constant stocking density of ten fish per tank and sex‐ratios of 1:1, 1:4, and 4:1 (male: female), the highest number of juveniles was obtained at a social structure of two males and eight females. Rate of cannibalism was independent of sex‐ratio, indicating that males and females are equally cannibalistic. These results suggest that the 300‐L broodstock tanks should be stocked with a maximum of two males and between five and eight females to obtain the greatest number of harvestable juveniles per tank.

The beaugregory damselfish, Stegastes leucostictus, is a marine teleost that does not actively ventilate its eggs by fanning them. Partial cannibalism is common in this species, but in field studies was found to be unrelated to ration level. Filial cannibalism differed from predation in the pattern of egg eating; filial cannibalism was characterised by a random pattern of egg loss from a clutch rather than an aggregated distribution. Embryos developed quicker and had higher survival rates when they were at low densities and in nest sites where oxygen levels were high, and experimental reduction of oxygen levels increased rates of filial cannibalism. Here I present a hypothesis for filial cannibalism in the beaugregory damselfish; males cannibalise egg clutches in order to reduce clutch density and improve oxygen supply to the remaining embryos. I use a model of filial cannibalism to demonstrate how oxygen mediated cannibalism may be adaptive, and discuss the evolution of filial cannibalism in the beaugregory damselfish and other teleosts.

Male river bullheads guard and care for egg masses during a single brood cycle every breeding season. A study of two bullhead populations demonstrated that nesting males show a strong reduction in food intake rate and that their physical condition deteriorates during parental care. The estimated weight loss for the average guarding male was 18.8% in one population and 13.5% in the other. This could in part be responsible for the peak of male mortality observed during the second part of the breeding season. A high incidence of egg cannibalism was observed in males guarding eggs. Analysis of the developmental stage of individual egg masses demonstrated that heterocannibalism is very rare in this species and that the observed rate of egg cannibalism is mainly due to guarding males preying upon their own eggs (filial cannibalism). In both populations the frequency of filial cannibalism was negatively correlated with the male's chance of getting other food items. The probability of a male cannibalizing its own eggs was also significantly influenced by the time elapsed since the beginning of parental care. The observed limited cannibalism of progeny in the river bullhead cannot be explained as a male's strategy for obtaining energy to be used in subsequent brood cycles, as suggested for other fishes which show filial cannibalism. Rather, it can be interpreted as a behaviour aimed at avoiding the risk of dying of starvation before the eggs hatch. The observed criteria of female mate choice, i.e. a preference for males in good physical condition and for males that already have eggs in their nests, are consistent with the prediction of Rohwer's filial cannibalism theory, although other hypotheses cannot be excluded.

Aquaculture of marine ornamental fish could potentially reduce the fishing pressure on wild stocks by the global aquarium trade, but its expansion is often constrained by the limited understanding on the biology and early life history of candidate species. The orchid dottyback Pseudochromis fridmani is a valuable and popular marine ornamental fish, but scientific reports on its baseline biology, especially the egg filial cannibalistic behaviour, are scarce. The present study documented key aspects of reproductive biology and early ontogeny of P. fridmani in captivity, including reproductive behaviour, patterns of spawning and filial cannibalism throughout a 12-month period by seven pairs of brood fish, as well as the embryonic and larval development. The results showed that the captive spawning of the broodstock pairs generally occurred every 5–11 days, most commonly every 6–8 days, throughout a year. Despite feeding the brood fish to satiation throughout the data collection period, the average monthly rate of egg filial cannibalism reached 55 ± 37%, but the cannibalism frequency appeared to be pair-specific. The egg incubation duration was approximately 96 h at 27 ± 1 °C, and the development of embryos from cleavage, blastula, gastrula, and segmentation to the pharyngula stage is herein described in detail. The newly hatched P. fridmani larvae possessed important structures and organs for first feeding, including pigmented eyes, developed jaws, and a straight-tube gut. The 0 to 14 days post-hatching (DPH) period appeared to be an important larval stage, as P. fridmani larvae were observed to complete major changes in morphology, gut development, and phototactic behaviour by 14 DPH. Under the culture conditions of this study, the earliest transition to the juvenile stage was observed on 31 DPH, and the majority of fish became juveniles by 56 DPH. The results of this study inform baseline aquaculture production protocols and direct future research, particularly to reduce filial cannibalism through broodstock management and to improve larval culture through supporting the early ontogenetic development of P. fridmani. Additionally, these findings form a foundation for further studying the biology and ecology of P. fridmani in the wild.

Cannibalistic behavior of a paternal mouthbrooding cardinalfish, Apogon notatus, was examined and compared with that of a sympatric congener, Apogon doederleini. In both species, males sometimes cannibalized their own entire broods, but their postcannibalistic behavior was markedly different. Males of A. doederleini respawned within a few days of cannibalism, usually changing mates, whereas males of A. notatus took several weeks to respawn, less frequently changing mates. This difference was attributed to mate availability for males. The operational sex ratio was female biased in A. doederleini but male biased in A. notatus, suggesting that the former males have higher mate availability and thus opportunities for remating soon after cannibalism. For male apogonids that accept only one clutch at a time, an effective way to compensate for reproductive loss entailed by filial cannibalism is to remate as soon as possible after cannibalism. The higher rate of filial cannibalism by A. doederleini than by A. notatus suggests that this cannibalism is facilitated by high mate availability. In contrast to filial cannibalism, heterocannibalism was more frequent in A. notatus. High population density and gregariousness may be important factors contributing to the frequent occurrence of heterocannibalism.

To understand behaviour during filial cannibalism in swordtails (Xiphophorus helleri), the parturition behaviour of eight individually kept females was recorded on videotape. Three levels of female activity (low, medium and high) were quantified by measuring the duration of each. Four additional behavioural events (non-cannibalistic feeding, as well as the birth, attack and cannibalism of juveniles) were quantified by determining the frequency of each. Females gave birth most frequently at a low level of activity and at this level of activity they most often gave birth at the top of the tank. Of all the attacks by females on the young, 84.4% occurred in the light. Most attacks were recorded at the bottom of the tank and 84.0% of all cannibalism occurred at the bottom. Cannibalism was most successful at the bottom of the tank with a cannibalism:attack ratio of 1:2.2 and least successful in the middle where no cannibalism was recorded. In the light, females spent more time at the top of the tank, whereas in the dark they spent more time at the bottom. It was suggested that the rate of cannibalism might be reduced if parts of the tank were kept constantly dark and if females were restricted from reaching those areas in the tank where the frequency of cannibalism was highest, namely the top and the bottom of the tank. Experimental designs and working hypotheses for future studies are discussed.

Maternal effects are an important source of adaptive variation, but little is known about how they vary throughout ontogeny. We estimate the contribution of maternal effects, sire genetic and environmental variation to offspring body size from birth until 1 year of age in the live-bearing fish Poecilia parae. In both the sexes, maternal effects on body size were initially high in juveniles, and then declined to zero at sexual maturity. In sons, this was accompanied by a sharp rise in sire genetic variance, consistent with the expression of Y-linked loci affecting male size. In daughters, all variance components decreased with time, consistent with compensatory growth. There were significant negative among-dam correlations between early body size and the timing of sexual maturity in both sons and daughters. However, there was no relationship between early life maternal effects and adult longevity, suggesting that maternal effects, although important early in life, may not always influence late life-history traits.

In the event of an instantaneous valve closure, the pressure transmitted to a surge tank induces the mass fluctuations that can cause high amplitude of water-level fluctuation in the surge tank for a reasonable cross-sectional area. The height of the surge tank is then designed using this high water level mark generated by the completely closed penstock valve. Using a conical surge tank with a non-constant cross-sectional area can resolve the problems of space and height. When addressing issues in designing open surge tanks, key parameters are usually calculated by using complex equations, which may become cumbersome when multiple iterations are required. A more effective alternative in obtaining these values is the use of simple charts. Firstly, this paper presents and describes the equations used to design open conical surge tanks. Secondly, it introduces user-friendly charts that can be used in the design of cylindrical and conical open surge tanks. The contribution can be a benefit for practicing engineers in this field. A case study is also presented to illustrate the use of these design charts. The case study’s results show that key parameters obtained via successive approximation method required 26 iterations or complex calculations, whereas these values can be obtained by simple reading of the proposed chart. The use of charts to help surge tanks designing, in the case of preliminary designs, can save time and increase design efficiency, while reducing calculation errors.

Male cortez damselfish, Stegastes rectifraenum, in a central Gulf of California population, ate a large percentage (28.3%) of the clutches they received. This high rate of filial cannibalism permitted the testing of several predictions concerning the types of clutches that should be preferentially eaten and the mating tactics females should employ to reduce cannibalism rates. Males ate clutches that were smaller than average and that were at early stages of development. Experimentally reduced clutches were consumed at higher rates than controls. When multiple clutches were present, males preferentially ate the younger, smaller clutches. Females were more likely to deposit eggs with males who were caring for other early-stage eggs and to avoid males with late-stage eggs. This pattern was accentuated in females that deposited smaller clutches. These results provide evidence that filial cannibalism represents an adaptive response to clutches that do not provide adequate benefits to warrant the costs of parental care.

The first results of female preference and chosen male mating success in a new model organism, the pentamorphic livebearing fish, Poecilia parae, are presented. Poecilia parae is a relative of the guppy, P. reticulata, and is assumed to have similar reproductive behavior. We tested the hypothesis that P. parae females, like female guppies, prefer carotenoid colored males as mates. Here we show that the time a female spent with males was significantly greater for carotenoid coloration in red and yellow melanzona, but time with these two morphs did not differ. The preferred red and yellow males mated significantly more often with their choosing females than did the non-preferred blue and parae males. The few blue melanzona and parae males that mated did so without performing courtship displays. Some females mated with all phenotypes including immaculata males during open group trials. Female P. parae clearly preferred males with carotenoid coloration, thereby corroborating the hypothesis. Alternative male mating tactics by blue melanzona, parae, and immaculata morphs and promiscuous mating by females also resembled features of reproductive behaviors exhibited by guppies.

Previous work (Reynolds and Gross 1992) has demonstrated that mate choice enables female guppies, Poecilia reticulata , to obtain heritable benefits (‘good genes’) for their offspring. It is not yet known whether males also signal their functional fertility, that is, their viability as fathers, to female guppies. Our study tested the hypothesis that a male9s behaviour reveals characteristics of his ejaculate. We uncovered a strong correlation between display rate and sperm number in male guppies derived from two wild Trinidadian populations. This result indicates that information on the functional fertility of potential mates is available to females. However, our investigation also found a significant relationship between the frequency of sneaky mating and sperm number. Female guppies in wild populations, particularly those experiencing a high predation regime, are constantly subjected to sneaky mating attempts. As the males responsible for these sneaky matings have highest reserves of sperm they may have the capacity to undermine female choice. The implications of these findings for sperm competition are discussed.
