Abstract

The boron K emission and absorption spectra of LaB 6 , SmB 6 and EUB 6 have been measured to investigate the electronic band structure of the valence and conduction bands. For LaB 6 the observed emission spectrum is compared with the photoelectron spectrum and also with the energy-band calculations by meansof a self-consistent augmented-plane-wave method. The result suggests that the B K emission and absorption spectra are not influenced significantly by the presence of the localized 4 f electrons of the rare-earth ion and provide information on the electronic band structure of rare-earth hexaborides.
