Abstract

Why have war, crime, and other forms of vile wrongdoing essentially been ongoing from the beginning of time? Why do so many people routinely engage in all sorts of lesser mean-spirited, overly-aggressive actions leading to the detriment and victimization of others? Far too many of us are unhappy today because of the actions of terrible, immoral people. Too often, we become pained by the routine immorality, nastiness, unfairness, deceit, cheating, manipulation, carelessness, greed, hostility, and even physical violence coming from so many of the people all around us — leaving us emotionally and physically injured in their wake. In essence, part of human nature is that most people are at least somewhat routinely sadistic. The capacity to do evil deeds is within us from birth, a manifestation of our evolution starting with our early ancestry; we emerged from the most highly aggressive and intelligent primate the earth has ever known, the killer ape.
