Abstract

The inoculation of laying hens with avian adenovirus (CELO) by the trachea or the drinking water resulted in a 10 per cent. drop in egg production lasting approximately 2 weeks. Egg shell quality and internal egg quality were not affected. When laying hens were inoculated with infectious bronchitis virus (IB) 3 weeks after inoculation with CELO virus, the drop in egg production was significantly less than after inoculation with IB virus alone. The numbers of soft shelled eggs were also lower in the group initially inoculated with CELO virus, as was the incidence of egg peritonitis. The possible mechanisms involved in this interference phenomenon are discussed.
