Abstract

For a semi-regenerative decision model we give sufficient conditions for the existence of an average cost optimal stationary policy. Such a policy can be gained as the limit of stationary policies, which are optimal for the corresponding discounted problem, if the discount factor tends to zero. This fact can be used to derive the existence of structured average cost optimal policies from the existence of structured optimal policies for the discounted case. An example from queuing theory illustrates this.
