Abstract
The determination of the appearance potentials from a conventional electron impact ion source, using the method of Lossing et al., involves the measurement of the ion currents for the unknown and the reference compounds at different electron energies, when changing the energy in the small steps of 0.1 to 0.2 eV, over a 10 eV range. Carried out manually, the method is a time-consuming operation, and whereas repeated measurements are made for greater accuracy, it is not easy to guarantee steady ion-chamber conditions throughout the experiment.
