Abstract

1.1. The concentrations of lipids in the plasma, liver and bile were compared in British (Bos taurus) and zebu (Brahman cross and Africander cross) cattle.2.2. Plasma and liver cholesterol and phospholipid concentrations were higher (P < 0·001) in zebu than in British animal, but triglyceride concentration were lower(p< 0·001) in Brahman cross than in Africander cross and British cows.3.3. The concentrations of cholesterol and phospholipid were higher (P < 0·01) in theplasma, bile and liver of steers growing normally than in steers losing weight.4.4. The concentrations of cholesterol and phospholipid were higher (P < 0·05) and the free to total cholesterol ratio lower (P < 0·05) in the caudal than in the lateral lobes of the liver.5.5. The correlations between the concentrations of cholesterol in plasma and bile, and between cholesterol and phospholipid in bile were significant.
