Vienna, like Paris, has recently witnessed a bitter struggle between the authorities and the head of the country's radio and television. Gerd Bacher, like his French counterpart Arthur Conte, has resisted attempts to curb the independence of the broadcasters. This is a slightly abridged translation of an article on the subject which appeared in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on 6 October 1973.
