Abstract

Since the release of the first Australian horror movie in the 1970s, many local horror movies have been influenced by American horror movies. In a small domestic marketplace where Australian horror films have long struggled to resonate with domestic audiences, some filmmakers have attempted to pass their films off as American in an attempt to target international audiences. Other filmmakers have sought to trade upon ‘Australianness’ to differentiate their product in a crowded marketplace. This chapter examines the influence of American horror films and the US marketplace on the content of contemporary Australian horror movies. It explores structural limitations of the Australian market and analyses textual characteristics of contemporary ‘faux-American’ horror titles and key films that trade upon distinctively Australian identifiers in the market.
