Abstract
Auroras hold a special place in the field of solar‐terrestrial research. Of all the field's intriguing phenomena, they were known first. Aristotle explained them (in his system) ages before telescopes routinely brought sunspots into view and compass needles revealed the world of magnetic activity and Hertzian waves sounded the Heaviside layer and satellites probed the solar wind and magnetosphere. Unofficially, seniority of acquaintance gives auroras the status of emblem for the field as a whole.
