Augmented Reality (AR) has emerged as a transformative technology in library systems, enhancing user engagement, information retrieval, and interactive learning. This study investigates the integration of AR in library services, focusing on its role in resource accessibility, digital literacy development, and user experience. Significantly, Aurasma, PoLAR, myLibrARy, etc., determine that AR technologies contribute to automated book sorting, wayfinding, interactive storytelling, and digital content visualisation. Furthermore, this study explores global implementations of AR, including National Library of Medicine (USA), National Library of Korea, and National Library of Sweden, etc. These initiatives highlight the potential of AR-driven interactive exhibits, immersive learning environments, and historical content augmentation in enhancing knowledge dissemination and cultural heritage preservation. This study emphasises the necessity of strategic funds, standardised implementation frameworks, and interdisciplinary collaboration to maximise the benefits of AR in library services. Furthermore, the present study evaluates the application of AR in libraries so that library management services can be improved. Additionally, the study tries to fill the research gap by providing different applications of AR in libraries and its impact on global libraries.

 • Health libraries review

The mission of the library and information service is to ensure that the knowledge base of health care is available and accessible to all providers, purchasers and consumers, and to promote and encourage its effective use. Access should be free at the point of use. Library services should be a national and regional responsibility. The close association with Postgraduate and Continuing Medical and Dental Education should continue. Clear terms of reference for library and information services should guarantee access to these services for all National Health Service (NHS) staff. There should be greater emphasis on quality aspects of information. Information Management and Technology (IM & T) strategy should take full account of the needs of library and information services so that the NHS investment in information networks can be fully realized. Good practice in library and information services should be identified, promoted and disseminated. National Health Service Management Executive (NHS-ME) initiatives which affect the library services of the NHS should be co-ordinated. A working party of users and librarians, working within the Functions and Manpower Review implementation process, should define a structure for the management and provision of NHS library services which gives the most value for money.

No regrets; just lessons: economic crisis is changing our life and the management of libraries
 • Sep 1, 2015
 • Petros A Kostagiolas

Introduction: library management and the global economic crisis This chapter attempts to take a global, or at least a European, look at the effects of the economic crisis on the dominant, market-driven approaches to library management and at the underlying socio-economic aspects of that crisis. Throughout history, library administrators and managers have certainly demonstrated an active interest in socioeconomic and technological change and crisis. The risks and threats posed to libraries and library collections are typically related to natural causes (earthquakes, floods, etc.) and to human-related disasters (epidemics and wars, terrorism, etc.) resulting from political and social instability. Economic crises, however, have deep philosophical roots, are difficult to predict and even harder to understand (Greene and McMenemy, 2012). This is so in the case of the global economic crisis of 2008, which hit not only libraries but also their dominant underlying library management principles with full force. Indeed, although a number of studies are available (see Kostagiolas et al., 2013, for a review) on the effects of economic crisis on library services and their operations, very few, if any, actually deal with the impact of economic crisis on the library management paradigm itself. Lessons can be learned from the current economic crisis in terms of the role and the socioeconomic positioning of libraries, and obviously the ‘proper’ after-crisis library management still needs to be detailed, elaborated and analysed. This chapter offers a contribution to discussions on the reassessment of the underlying values of library and information services management in the face of economic crisis. This management notion should aim to guide and actually prepare libraries to respond in financially straitened times. For the present analysis, it is not considered necessary to provide detailed definitions of economic (or fiscal) crises or even to detail the literature on the causes of the different types of crises. However, everyone dealing with library management will agree that a deep economic recession can bring about catastrophic socio-economic events that may cause shock to libraries. For example, public library administration will be in a distressed condition when state funding is reduced by 80% in three fiscal years and staffing levels are dramatically reduced.

Aim: Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) brought significant innovation and improvement to library services and methods of meeting user needs. Assessment of user satisfaction with the various library services is an important variable toward inclusive library management and marketing of library services in the 21st century. With the application of ICTs bringing about different resources and various accessibility modes (print and online), it became necessary to investigate user satisfaction with various available library resources and services. Methods: The study addressed user satisfaction using adapted customer satisfaction scores (CSAT) metric with Rodski Survey to elicit information from 560 respondents that visited the library within the space of one week. The questionnaire was given to the respondents during their library visit twice daily for one week and the process excluded those that have filled the questionnaire before. Results: The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed the level of user satisfaction to be average. It was also discovered that the resources in the library did not meet their information needs as the majority responded that the resources are inadequate and the overall assessment of their interaction with librarians is excellent despite the inadequate resources. Conclusion: Based on the findings, recommendations were made to create a holistic marketing strategy to improve usability of the library, to acquire more resources and funding to meet user expectations, and to address the need for adequate management of library resources.

Transforming Library Services with Metadata Lakes: Leveraging Big Data and AI for Enhanced Resource Management
 • Dec 10, 2025
 • Asian Journal of Information Science and Technology
 • Arti Sawale + 1 more

This study explores the transformative role of metadata in the management of library resources and services, particularly within the context of big data. Metadata enhances data discoverability, indexing, and automation, which, in turn, improves searchability, analytics, and decision-making processes. Libraries are facing an explosion of big data, diverse formats, and evolving user expectations, necessitating a shift in how metadata is managed. In response, this paper proposes a theoretical framework for implementing a “metadata lake” within libraries operating in a big data environment. The concept of a metadata lake is a novel approach to metadata management, and this study aligns it with the characteristics of big data to demonstrate its potential in library systems. Metadata management in libraries has evolved to fit into the big data ecosystem, creating opportunities for knowledge discovery, AI-driven automation, and predictive analytics. By adopting big data technologies, libraries can enhance access, efficiency, data transfer and research impact. The metadata lake concept offers scalability, AI-driven enrichment, and interoperability, allowing libraries to leverage big data and semantic technologies to improve the storage, processing, and retrieval of metadata. The integration of AI-driven recommendations will further enhance content discovery and user engagement. This paper highlights the importance of adopting advanced analytics, linked open data, and semantic technologies in library metadata management. It presents the metadata lake as the future of library metadata, ensuring libraries remain adaptable and capable of contributing to the big data landscape. Furthermore, future research could explore the use of machine learning (ML) and natural language processing (NLP) to automate metadata creation, enrich bibliographic records, and improve classification accuracy, ensuring that libraries continue to evolve in line with technological advancements.

Pattern-Based Augmented Reality Authoring Using Different Degrees of Immersion: A Learning Nugget Approach
 • Mar 28, 2022
 • Frontiers in Virtual Reality
 • Linda Rau + 3 more

Creating Augmented Reality (AR) applications can be an arduous process. With most current authoring tools, authors must complete multiple authoring steps in a time-consuming process before they can try their AR application and get a first impression of it. Especially for laypersons, complex workflows set a high barrier to getting started with creating AR applications. This work presents a novel authoring approach for creating mobile AR applications. Our idea is to provide authors with small, ready-to-use AR applications that can be executed and tested directly as a starting point. Authors can then focus on customizing these AR applications to their needs without programming knowledge. We propose to use patterns from application domains to further facilitate the authoring process. Our idea is based on the learning nugget approach from the educational sciences, where a nugget is a small and self-contained learning unit. We transfer this approach to the field of AR authoring and introduce an AR nugget authoring tool. The authoring tool provides pattern-based self-contained AR applications, called AR nuggets. AR nuggets use simple geometric objects to give authors an impression of the AR application. By replacing these objects and further adaptions, authors can realize their AR applications. Our authoring tool draws from non-immersive desktop computers and AR devices. It synchronizes all changes to an AR nugget both to an AR device and a non-immersive device. This enables authors to use both devices, e.g., a desktop computer to type text and an AR device to place virtual objects in the 3D environment. We evaluate our proposed authoring approach and tool in a user study with 48 participants. Our users installed the AR nugget authoring tool on their own devices, worked with it for 3 weeks, and filled out a questionnaire. They were able to create AR applications and found the AR nugget approach supportive. The users mainly used the desktop computer for the authoring tasks but found the synchronization to the AR device helpful to experience the AR nuggets at any time. However, the users had difficulties with some interactions and rated the AR nugget authoring tool in a neutral field.

Academic libraries are facing a piquant situation and unforeseen challenges in this
age of information technology. They are reeling under pressure to fulfill their obligation of
meeting the diverse information needs of their stakeholders. The rapid implementation of
information technology in all areas of life, including libraries, has led to concerns about
how information technology transforms the nature and quality of work. What is the impact
of information technology on simplifying the service functions?. Library, office, and
industrial automation research have shown that the impact of technology depends on how
and why it is used, rather than on the technology itself. Library management systems are
commonly used in all educational related institutes. Many commercial products are
available. However, many institutions may not be able to afford the cost of using
commercial products or may not get satisfaction in customization facilities available.
Alternatively, the institution itself can take a decision to develop its library management
system software using its own expertise. Library management system is a modern
innovation that is expected to help in the circulation registration of processed books and
register users. A case study is undertaken at SIMS library to know the effect of automation
on the quality of providing library services, user satisfaction of library services, the
effective automation of work, and the control of library functions. This paper discusses the
impact of the automated system on staff, job satisfaction, and client relations. Results
showed that the developed system made a significant impact on the quality library service
management.
