Abstract

The attenuation of longitudinal hypersonic waves with a frequency of 9.4 GHz has been measured in Z-cut quartz in the range 0.04< alpha <10 ( alpha in dB cm-1) using a pulse-echo method. The generation and the detection has been performed by a piezoelectric CdS film transducer. The results are in agreement with recent theoretical developments explaining the attenuation in terms of three-phonon interactions. The attenuation follows an approximate T6 law in the range 15K<T<40 K.
