Abstract
The American Indian Movement has had an important impact on American society. It has been variously described as part of the ethnic consciousness movement and as a class phenomenon. An analysis of the history of the movement's emergence and its development suggest, however, that instead it is a supra‐ethnic phenomenon. The very special historical circumstances which have formed the relationship between Native Americans and American Society, the impact of AIM on the larger society, and the attraction of AIM to Indian peoples is analyzed.
